6 Eye Diseases and Their Symptoms

Bell’s Palsy of the Eye

Bell’s Palsy is a weakness of one side of the face that can cause paralysis. This disease causes the face to droop due to muscle weakness. Although this condition does not cause blurred vision, individuals who have a severe case of Bell’s Palsy may not be able to close one eye or create an expression. Palsy of the eye is a neurological condition that affects the muscles that control the movement of the eye. This condition could be caused by a viral infection. Symptoms include pain in the ear, drooling, and dry eyes.

Acanthamoeba Keratitis

One of many eye diseases is acanthamoeba keratitis. This is a rare disease that can cause blindness and permanent visual impairment. Symptoms include sensitivity to light, eye redness, eye pain, severe headaches, and blurred vision. To diagnose this disease, Dr. Trapeni will run a series of tests from samples of the eye. A microscope and gram-negative bacteria are used to determine if this disease is present within the eye.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one eye disease many people are familiar with because it is more common than other eye diseases. Glaucoma does not have many symptoms that would cause an individual to be alarmed, but include distorted or blurred vision, and slow loss of vision. Dr. Paul Trapeni Jr. will use eye drops to dilate your pupils followed by a vision test and thorough examination of the eyes.

Retinitis

There are two types of retinitis, retinitis pigmentosa, and CMV retinitis. Retinitis is a disease that damages a person’s vision by damaging the retina. Symptoms of this disease include loss of night vision, loss of peripheral vision, blurred vision, and cloudy or speckled vision, also known as floaters. Dr. Trapeni may perform a visual field test or use an electroretinogram to help diagnose this disease.

5. Uveitis

Uveitis is an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye., known as the uvea. This rare disease has less than 200,000 cases each year. Symptoms of this disease include light sensitivity, dark floating spots, redness, and pain in the eye. Diagnosis of uveitis requires lab and imaging tests. Children and adults of all ages can be affected.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease that is caused by a complication of diabetes. This disease affects individuals, including children and adults of all ages, but is prevalent in individuals who are between the ages of 6 and 60 years of age and older.
