An optomap is a panoramic digital image that shows more than 80% of the retina at once. This image is created by a laser scanner which gives Dr. Trapeni a superior view of the retina. Optomap is unlike traditional equipment. This examination method has given optometrists’ significantly more time to evaluate the retina to determine if there are any signs of disease. This can lead to early detection of common diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and even cancer. The testing is quick, easy, and painless.

What are the benefits of Optomap?

The unique optomap ultra-wide-field view helps your eye care practitioner detect early signs of retinal disease more effectively and efficiently than with traditional eye exams.  Optomap facilitates early protection from vision impairment or blindness, early detection of life-threatening diseases like cancer, preventive to strokes, and signs of cardiovascular disease. By choosing the optomap, Dr. Trapeni has a digital record to refer back on during the next annual visit. This will let Dr. Trapeni compare each picture to the previous year to determine if anything major changed. These images can then be compared to each other over time to look for changes in the eye.

How does Optomap work?

The patient places their eye up the Optomap instrument for a photograph. The doctor will then position the patient for a photograph and takes the picture.  The Optomap captures its image in only 1/4 of a second.  The photographer takes two photos and evaluates the images.  If the images look good the same process is repeated on the second eye.

Can anyone have Optomap performed?

Yes. Children and adults of all ages can all be candidates for Optomap. In fact, many vision problems begin in early childhood, so it’s important for children to receive quality routine eye exams and have Optomap performed each time. These digital pictures will ensure the health of the child’s eye and catch early detection of diseases if any occur.
